Introduction
General Surgical Instructions:
Prescriptions and Medications:
- Have any prescriptions filled prior to your surgery date.
- An oral sedative is available upon request
- The sedative should be taken 90 minutes prior to the appointment.
- If a sedative is taken you must have a driver to and from the appointment.
- Take pain relievers and antibiotics as directed.
- Start using your prescription rinse the day following your surgery.
- Do not brush the surgical area until after the sutures are removed.
- If a gum graft was done, avoid using toothpaste for one week.
- Avoid alcohol and aspirin for 3 – 5 days prior to surgery, as they are blood thinners and may cause excessive bleeding and delay healing.
- Please eat a good meal before your appointment, as you will be numb when you leave and not feel like eating for a while.
Have an Ice Pack at Home:
- The use of ice will help reduce swelling and pain after surgery
- Ice is useful for the first day after surgery.
- Moist heat may be applied the day following surgery, to help reduce swelling.
Diet suggestions:
- A soft diet is recommended for the first week. We recommend foods such as fish, eggs, pasta, mashed potatoes, yogurt, soup, etc.
- Do not eat nuts, seeds, popcorn and chips for one month following your surgery.
- Make sure to eat before your surgery, as you may not feel like eating afterwards.
Recuperation:
- Allow 24 to 28 hours of rest after your surgery
- Minimize your activity during this time.
- Avoid activities that will elevate your heart rate and blood pressure.
- Healing will occur much faster if you are resting.
