Oral Conscious Sedation

Anxiety-control to put your mind at-ease

Today more than ever, patients are aware of the importance of periodontal health and the potential consequences of untreated disease. Despite this increased awareness, patient anxiety and fear concerning treatment can sometimes get in the way of optimal periodontal care. In addition to new treatment options that use refined techniques and improvements in local anesthesia, conscious sedation is available to make your treatment more comfortable. This important option has eased the minds of many periodontal patients, and unlocked the benefits of periodontal treatment for those who would have otherwise avoided it.

Dr. Waring may recommend oral conscious sedation as a preferred method of anxiety control to ensure that you are comfortable and relaxed during your procedure. Conscious sedation is a safe drug-induced state which you are conscious and pleasantly relaxed, yet free of fear, anxiety and apprehension. This is a safe and effective way to feel comfortable and confident during your periodontal treatment.

Conscious sedation is different from general anesthesia in that your protective reflexes of coughing and swallowing are still intact. Your vital signs are carefully monitored during the interval of the procedure. You will need to have a driver to and from the office the day of the appointment and must not drive or operate heavy machinery the day following your treatment. The majority of patients do not remember anything about their procedure.

For patients who require deeper sedation, we also have an anesthesiologist who comes on-site while we perform your dental treatment. Dr. Waring will explain your options and describe the one that’s best for you.
