Extractions

Teeth extractions may be needed for a number of reasons:

  • Severe decay
  • Advanced periodontal disease
  • Broken in a way that cannot be repaired
  • Poorly positioned in the mouth (such as impacted teeth)
  • Preparation for orthodontic treatment

The removal of a single tooth can lead to problems related to your chewing ability, problems with your jaw joint, and shifting teeth, which can have a major impact on your dental health.

To avoid these complications, Dr. Waring will discuss alternatives to extractions as well as replacement of the extracted teeth.

Procedure

At the time of extraction, Dr. Waring will numb your tooth, jawbone and gum tissue that surrounds the area with a local anesthetic. A second different anesthetic will then be used to minimize any bleeding. We will confirm that you have profound anesthesia before proceeding.

During the extraction process you will feel some pressure. This is from the process of firmly rocking the tooth in order to widen the socket for removal. You will feel the pressure without pain as the anesthetic has numbed the nerves stopping the transference of pain, yet the nerves that transmit the sensation of pressure are not profoundly affected

Often, the tooth will be sectioned to allow for a minimally traumatic extraction and to preserve the surrounding bone. The tooth is cut into sections and removed one section at a time.
