Dental Crown Lengthening

What comes to mind when you think of the perfect smile? If you are like most people, you think about perfectly straight, bright, white teeth. However, your teeth are just one element of your smile. Believe it or not, your gums can also play a huge role in your smile’s quality. Even if your teeth are perfect, excess gum tissue can make those teeth appear small and diminish your smile and your confidence! At Mark C. Waring, DDS, we can restore a beautiful, even gum line with crown lengthening.

What is Crown Lengthening?

In the simplest terms, a crown lengthening is a procedure that involves the removal of excess gum tissue around the upper teeth. It is designed to restore an even, natural gum line, and make your teeth appear longer. In some cases, a small amount of bone may also need to be removed as well, in order to achieve the desired results. With a restored gum line, you will be able to smile confidently.

How is Crown Lengthening Performed?

The procedure for crown lengthening is performed under a local anesthetic, although a sedative can be provided if you are feeling exceptionally nervous. The length of time it takes to complete depends on a few different factors, such as how many teeth are being worked on and whether or not you need to have bone removed. Even if there is excess gum tissue over only a single tooth, we will also work on the adjacent teeth, which allows us to create a more even appearance.

After the anesthetic (and sedation, if used) has taken effect, we can begin the procedure. Several small incisions are made in your gums, which allows us to separate the gum tissue from your teeth. We pull back the tissue to gain better access to the roots of your teeth and the jawbone. We then remove the excess tissue, as well as any necessary bone, and wash your gums with a sterile solution. Once clean, we stitch your gums back against the surface of your teeth, so that they can begin to heal.

Reasons for Crown Lengthening

While crown lengthening is often used for aesthetic purposes, such as correcting your “gummy” smile, there are several other uses for the procedure as well:
•  Crowns: If you have too much gum tissue (even just slightly too much), it can prevent a dental crown from providing a damaged tooth with the coverage and protection it needs. Crown lengthening removes the excess tissue, so that the crown can fit comfortably and naturally into your smile while being able to perform its job.
•  Fillings: If you have decay at the gum line, a crown lengthening provides us the access we need to fully eliminate the decay and successfully place the filling.
•  Gum Disease: Excess gum tissue can harbor harmful oral bacteria. It can be difficult to remove the bacteria, even with regular brushing, which can result in gum disease. By removing excess gum tissue, your gums are easier to care for, and your smile can stay beautiful and healthy!

A crown lengthening restores the beauty of your smile, which can greatly help to improve your confidence. If the shine of your smile is dulled by excess gum tissue, contact Mark C. Waring, DDS at (480) 820-4342 to find out if you can benefit from a crown lengthening today!
